PRIDE 2017

June is LGBTQ Pride Month, which is marked with all manner of events around the world–from parties to rallies to parades–to commemorate the Stonewall Rebellion in June 1969. The Stonewall Riots are commonly accepted as the birthplace of the LGBT movement as we know it today-the party people at the historic gay bar, the Stonewall Inn, fought back against a police raid that night in June and in turn sparked a nationwide activist movement. Less political in nature and more of a celebration of a community and culture, pride is a symbol of love and acceptance, an opportunity for everyone to take stand against discrimination and violence toward LGBTQ people and is a chance for the community to reflect on both advances made toward progress, and during a time when progress seems to be at stake – any setbacks.

New York City’s Pride March is one of the biggest in the world and this year was no exception. The theme this year was simple and to the point: “We Are Proud”, which is poignant and timely when so many rights seem to be under attack. Some of New York’s coolest kids joined in on the fun: Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson of Broad City had their own float, as did the N.B.A..and the ACLU was the Grand Marshal of the parade in NYC. In Toronto, Justin Trudeau, the decidedly dreamiest world leader of all world leaders this side of maple syrup, marched in the Pride Parade and looked like he was having an absolute ball doing it. In Chicago, Orange is the New Black star Lea DeLaria served as Grand Marshal of the parade and Mayor Rahm Emanuel also marched. Internationally there were parades in Sao Paolo, Seville, Madrid, Istanbul, Mexico City, Manila, Belgrade and Paris — and London is coming up this weekend.

During a time when LGBTQ rights are fully under attack not only in the US, but around the world, this day of love and acceptable of a beautiful community has never been more important. Since sartorially, the Pride parade has always been in step with how we like to do it at Pitusa HQ, we wanted to share some of the joyful photos of some Pride Parades around the world.

Check them out here below. In the words of the inimitable Lin Manuel Miranda last year at the TONY awards “Love is love is love is love is love”.
