CLEAN BEAUTY FOR SUMMER
At Pitusa, we’re fans of all-natural when it comes to our beauty. So this summer, we’re doing a series on the blog where we discuss all things clean. If you’re not familiar with the term, it’s a back to basics approach to beauty–using ingredients you can actually read and pronounce, and that don’t cause cancer, aren’t hormone disruptors or allergens. Sounds like a good deal, right? Since it’s the start of the summer and, if you’re like us, you’re planning your beach getaways, it’s time to talk sun coverage: whether you like block, cream, screen or oil — you’re going to need something, honey. Whilst we enjoy sun-worshipping with the best of them, we also know that we need to protects our bods — melanoma is real, and skin cancer is getting worse and the hole in the ozone layer is getting bigger and ….ok, ok, we’ll spare you the “end is nigh” talk for today. But believe it: gone are the days when you could post up at the beach with some foil, some olive oil and a beach chair and bake until sundowners.
Sunscreen is one of the worst offenders on the “dirty” list for beauty products, so it’s important to do your research and pick one that will really provide you with good coverage and not let any nasty chemicals seep into your bloodstream (noooo thank you!) We would much prefer that dewey look with the least amount of damage available to us. There are so many dodgy ingredients in mainstream brands that we’ve committed to looking for alternatives when it comes to our product: whether it’s makeup, suncream, or hair product.
Something surprising but very good to know is that when it comes to your suncreams and blocks: anything above SPF 50 and over is a basically just marketing ploy. There is no real scientific evidence that anything above SPF 50 actually provides better coverage, so it’s fine (for both adults and kids) to use something in the 30 to 50 SPF range. Just remember to reapply when you’re at the beach! Especially if you’re wearing our Mini Pom Pom Necklace Dress, $130 (“I’d love to get some weird tan lines this summer!” Said no-one. Ever.)
Just a few years ago, committing to clean beauty would have meant sacrificing style for substance. In other words, you’d be buying a lot of crunchy granola products if you wanted to have a better-for-you-product. But luckily there has been a real renaissance in the clean-beauty space, and there are so many brands with beautiful packaging, fabulous product and none of the nasties. With the recent advent of clean beauty becoming decidedly cool, this is just no longer the case.
So when you take your Pitusa to the beach this summer, be sure to pack these products in your Piñata Bag, $144.
